The grim concrete is littered with unfinished
cigarettes. On the empty chair,
a yellowed cushion is exposed

from the tear where a woman
burned determination. It is dark underneath
the lingering haze of nicotine. She left

a blue cotton apron hanging
inside the doorway and decided to forget

Ken Kesey's bus

Ken Kesey's legendary bus. Eugene, Oregon.

An author, counter cultural icon, and (my) hometown hero was born today in 1935. He lived hard and lived to write about it. His works include One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometimes A Great Notion.  Kesey was also the main character in Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Happy birthday, prankster.
