OregonMy public library must love me. They actually honor my (frequent) purchase requests. I like to think I have great literary taste, but perhaps I’m just convincing.

One of my goals is to build their collection of local authors. Luckily, there’s no shortage of talent.

Recently, the Oregon Book Award finalists were announced. My reading list has just exploded.

Here’s a few more of my favorite Oregon authors:

1) Diana Abu-Jaber (fiction)
2) Dorianne Laux (poetry)
3) Charles Goodrich (non-fiction)
4) Kathleen Dean Moore (creative non-fiction)
5) Roland Smith (young adult)

Ken Kesey's bus

Ken Kesey's legendary bus. Eugene, Oregon.

An author, counter cultural icon, and (my) hometown hero was born today in 1935. He lived hard and lived to write about it. His works include One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometimes A Great Notion.  Kesey was also the main character in Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Happy birthday, prankster.
